Description:Amongst the many volumes and bundles of household accounts is a huge volume which contains the household accounts for Trentham Hall from 1874 to 1875. The ‘Housekeeping Account’ includes a heading ‘Dogs’ and details expenditure on meals for dogs.

Trentham Hall didn’t just cater for its own dogs. The Housekeeping Account suggests that guest’s dogs also dined at the Hall when their owners were visiting. The account refers to the Duchess of Sutherland’s two dogs, and dogs belonging to Lord Stafford, Lady Florence and a man named Mr. Johnson. Their five dogs were kept at the Hall for four days. A visitor named in the account as Colonel Marshall also had one dog who was fed at Trentham for ‘1 day’ only. The cost for feeding the six dogs amounted to five shillings and threepence.
