Description:There are many letters in the Sutherland Papers exchanged between the fourth Duke and Duchess of Sutherland during their marriage.

A notable example is a letter written to Duchess Millicent by the Duke of Sutherland on the occasion of their fifth wedding anniversary.

Written on Friday 18th October 1889 the letter wishes Millicent ‘every blessing’ for ‘the day on which you made me so happy by marrying me’. The letter provides a poignant insight into the relationship between the Duke and Duchess, who the Duke refers to as ‘my own dear wife’.

The Sutherland Papers also include many presentation volumes and scrolls given to the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland on the occasion of their wedding in 1884. These beautiful artefacts often decorated with elaborate illuminations were presented to Cromartie and Millicent by the Mayor and Aldermen of the Borough of Longton on their Estate, and also by the tenants of their Lilleshall estates.
