Description:The image above comes from a series of books called the Lightwood Cottage Rentals. It was kept in the same way as similar series for the Trentham Cottages, Trentham farms, Newcastle houses, South Staffordshire properties and the payment of rents for being connected to the Staffordshire Potteries Waterworks pipes in Longton.

The Lightwood series of rentals records the payment of rent by the poorer tenants in Lightwood, Blurton, Normacot, Longton, Meir and Caverswall. Each rental contains the names of the tenants and the amount they owe. It was then filled in when they paid. Money spent by the tenant on improvements or alterations to the property are noted. When a tenancy ends there is often information recorded about who will have the property next and this is where the information about relationships in the index comes from. When a person is recorded as having died their property may continue to be held by their representatives, or their executors.
Before 1835, rent was collected twice a year and there was a separate list for each collection. These took place on the traditional dates of Lady Day (25 March) and Michaelmas (29 September).
