Description:John Sutton lectured in history for thirty years at Anglia Ruskin University (1972-2002). Specialising in the history of the Civil War, in 1983-1984 John wrote and presented a series of six television programmes on the Civil War in Eastern England. In 1999 John masterminded conferences commemorating the 350th anniversary of the trial and execution of Charles I and the quarter centenary of the birth of Oliver Cromwell. Since retiring, John has written ten biographies for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and he regularly lectures for Cambridge University’s summer schools. John is currently writing a book Brothers of the Blade about the infantry regiment raised by William, fifth Baron Paget, in Staffordshire in August 1642.

A contributor to the Sutherland Collection Lichfield Study Day in May 2008, John has written an article based on the talk he delivered at this event, exploring documents in the Sutherland Papers which tell us about the famous battle of Hopton Heath.
