Description:Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower was born in 1851, son of George Granville William Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1828-1892), third Duke of Sutherland and his first wife Duchess Anne, Countess of Cromartie (d. 1888). Succeeding his father as Marquis of Stafford, Cromartie became the fourth Duke of Sutherland on his father's death in 1892.
Denis Stuart writes that Cromartie 'like to supervise the business of living, looking after the servants and drains and keeping the household accounts'.
The Sutherland Papers contain a number of documents relating to different aspects of Cromartie's life. Newspaper articles tell us about his marriage in 1884 to Millicent St. Clair Erskine (1867-1955). Subscriptions lists from the early twentieth century reveal that Cromartie donated money to many local and national charities and societies, and was an enthusiastic supporter of local hunting. In addition, documents which can be seen in the Bicycles, Cars, Aeroplanes & Yachts section of Progress tell us about Cromartie's Amulet Bicycle and his enthusiasm for motorcars.
