Description:The Hordern family of Newcastle-under-Lyme were candle makers, or tallow chandlers. The Sutherland Papers feature documents relating to the family’s business and its development over a century between 1681 and 1790. The Hordern’s story tells us about one North Staffordshire family’s business on the Trentham estate and about the politics of trade in the eighteenth century.
