Description:In 1849 George Granville William Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1828-1892), who would become the third Duke of Sutherland in 1861, married Anne Hay-Mackenzie of Cromartie and Newhall. In 1861, Anne became Countess of Cromartie. After she died in 1888 her second surviving son Francis succeeded her as Earl of Cromartie.

Duchess Anne & Queen Victoria

Anne became a close friend of Queen Victoria, and when Elizabeth, the daughter of Harriet Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duchess of Sutherland (1806-1868) became ill, Anne was appointed by the Queen to serve as her Mistress of the Robes. The close relationship between Duchess Anne and Queen
Victoria is reflected in their correspondence, particularly the many letters written to Duchess Anne by the Queen herself, which refer to the Duchess simply as ‘Annie’.
