Description:The Sutherland Papers include a number of personal account books kept by Harriet Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1806-1868), the second Duchess of Sutherland, between 1827 and 1839.

Lady Harriet’s account book for 1827 includes payments of ten shillings and six pence for ‘4 Children’s Books’, one pound and one shilling ‘for a shawl’, and four pounds and eighteen shillings and ten pence for ‘black silk’. Lady Harriet’s accounts reveal that she frequently purchased new shawls. Her accounts for September 1827 include payments for ‘a shawl & neck shawl’ at five pounds and four shillings. In the same month she also paid one pound for ‘Books’, and fifteen shillings for ‘Ribbon & Honey Water'.

Lady Harriet's Account Books indicate that her personal expenses were primarily on clothing and in donations she made to charities and societies. In January 1828 she made a donation of one pound to ‘The Spanish Benefit Concert'.
