Description:The Duke and the British Museum

Owing to his prestigious social position, the second Duke of Sutherland acquired many public responsibilities, as an influential landowner and as a patron of national institutions.

One letter amongst his papers is from the Archbishop of Canterbury, requesting that George Granville consider the role of trustee of the British Museum. Dated May 5th 1841, the Archbishop writes to inform the Duke that ‘on consulting with the Lord Chancellor, & the Speaker of the House of Commons, I find they concur with me in wishing your grace to become a Trustee of the British Museum’.
