Description:The document featured above is an advertisement for the Brighton Museum of New York. The article was published in 1880 and details the attractions to be seen during the third Duke of Sutherland’s visit to America; a trip which stemmed from the Duke’s desire to see the country’s modern railway system. Of particular interest are the “wonders of the world” on display which the article refers to. The sight of the railways would have quenched the Duke’s land-owning and academic interest but no doubt his curiosity was also raised by the “Giant of Giants”, “the midgets”, the man with the “largest beard in the world” and “Miss Lancaster the Long-Haired Beauty”. The document is a wonderful pictorial source for anyone interested in the third Duke’s adventures abroad.

These pages have been researched and written by Emma Jones, a Work Placement Student from Wolverhampton Girls High School. Emma explored documents in the Sutherland Papers relating to the Third Duke of Sutherland's Foreign Travels during the late nineteenth century as part of her placement at Staffordshire Record Office.
