Description:The Sutherland Papers contain a wide variety of plans of Staffordshire properties, including a number of houses in Barlaston. These fascinating documents tell us about the design of domestic properties in the area during the nineteenth century.
Barlaston Cottage
One detailed plan shows the layout of a property named ‘Barlaston Cottage’. The cottage had three bedrooms and a wash house. A kitchen with adjoining dairy and scullery was situated next to the pantry. In addition to these rooms, the cottage had a sitting room and parlour and a number of outbuildings including a coal house, stable and trap shed. Surrounded by a garden with shrubs, the property had a number of paved and gravel paths.
Plan of Charles Gould’s House, Barlaston
The plan of Charles Gould’s house in Barlaston includes a drawing of the exterior of the property with a plan of interior rooms. A dairy, pantry and scullery accompanied a kitchen and parlour. The property also had a number of outbuildings including a cow house, a stable and a building for cows and fowl.
