Description:In 1779 renovations were made to the Steward’s accommodation at Trentham Hall. The document featured above outlines proposals for a new Steward’s room at the Hall, complaining that the present room was ‘dark’, with a ‘crooked and inconvenient’ passage.

The proposals suggest that ‘The Lattice Cellar and the Passage on the North side’ would be converted into a room for the Steward and that his present room would become a ‘Cellar’.

Improvements to the design of the new Steward’s room are also suggested in the proposal. The new room was to be ‘larger’ and the present door was to be made into a window to make the room ‘lighter’. The new room would also be in a ‘much more convenient situation both as to the admission of People’.

When considering the accommodation of staff at Trentham Hall, much thought was given to the effect that any changes would have to life upstairs. The Proposal notes that the new accommodation would be ‘not so liable to disturb Company above stairs because the Billiard Room will not be so much frequented as the Common dining Parlour’.
