Description:The document above is entitled ‘An Act to amend the Laws relating to Savings Banks, and to the purchase of Government Annuities through the medium of Savings Banks’. This document relates to the new Savings Bank Act which was made in August 1844.

The document tells us about the declarations which depositors were required to sign before they could deposit money in accounts at savings banks. Depositors were also required to produce their Depositors' Check Book for inspection at least once a year.

The Act also describes reforms to the procedure of paying out money to female depositors when they married. The document states that the female depositor would be personally entitled to receive her money unless her husband gave the Trustees or Managers ‘Notice in Writing of such Marriage’, and required ‘Payment to be made to him’.
