Description:M. M. B. Higham tells us that there was no church in Tittensor until the end of the nineteenth century when Duchess Millicent established St. Luke’s in the village. The foundation stone of the church was laid at a ceremony attended by Edward, Prince of Wales, the future King Edward the Seventh. Higham quotes the words carved on the stone:

This Foundation Stone was laid by the Duchess of Sutherland, Countess of Cromartie, on June the eighteenth, 1880, in the presence of H. R. H. the Prince of Wales

The Sutherland Papers contain many plans and drawings relating to the design and construction of Tittensor Church and the vicarage which was built for the clergyman of the Church between 1881 and 1882.
