Description:Robert Hagerwas specifically wanted money to go to the Holy Land. Many thousands went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, St. James at Compostela in Spain or St. Peter at Rome. There was a sense of Christendom as a whole above national and localy loyalties. Every year thousands took to the road motivated by a desire to pray at specially holy places perhaps to fulfil a vow or perform a penance. Pilgrims had a specially privileged legal status and wore distinctive clothing while they were on pilgrimage. Most people must have made some sort of pilgrimage, if only to a local shrine; only the wealthy or most highly motivated went to Palestine, Rome or Compostela.

Lilleshall already had some land in Shrewsbury originally the grant of the prebends of St. Alkmund’s; their town property grew round this nucleus by gifts and purchases such as this.

It is noteworthy that the witnesses to this deed include the bailiffs of Shrewsbury and other substantial residents of Shrewsbury.
