Description:The Sutherland family were extremely concerned about the pollution to the River Trent which was caused by sewage from the Potteries towns. An article from the Staffordshire Sentinel on January 11th 1908 indicates that the pollution of the River Trent was a major issue in negotiations relating to the federation of the six towns, particularly the question whether the ‘condition’ of the River Trent ‘would be better dealt with by County Councils than a Potteries County Borough’.

The third and fourth Dukes had been prominent in efforts to prevent further pollution by issuing injunctions against the Potteries towns. The article states that pollution was ‘far more likely to be remedied by a united Council than by the existing system of local government’, suggesting that this was ‘one of the reasons why the Duke of Sutherland’ was such a ‘strong supporter’ of Federation. The writer adds ‘the polluted state of the Trent is a terror to Trentham’.
