Description:Sir John was also involved in cock fighting. A letter from the 3rd Duke of Rutland, dated 2nd July 1722 refers to ‘our Cocking’. Sir John and Rutland were active participants in cock fighting, organising matches in which their own cockerels would fight with other birds. Rutland writes: ‘I am extreamly oblig’d to you for letting me know we are to have the pleasure of seeing you…tho I am sorry to have you for an antagonist’. Rutland is very competitive, asserting that ‘my cock…cannot be beat’.
