Description:The Williamson family of Stafford played an important role in the local politics of the Borough. Owning substantial lands in Staffordshire, Ralph, John, Thomas, Gervais and William Williamson all served as Freemen of Stafford Borough. Ralph and his nephew John Williamson went on to become Mayor of Stafford and High Sheriff of Staffordshire respectively.
The Sutherland Papers contain a number of documents relating to the lands and properties owned by the Williamson family and also the wills of Ralph and John.
Extracts from Stafford Parish Register: The Burials of the Williamson Family
The document above survives amongst these papers and provides details about the Williamsons and the dates on which they were buried.
The document states that the information provided had been extracted from the Register belonging to the Parish of St. Mary in the Borough of Stafford. These records indicate that a man named John Williamson had been buried on 24th March 1720 three years before his relative Edward Williamson who was buried on 11th August 1723. Gervais Williamson was buried on 7th January 1726, and William Williamson on the 10th October 1761. Ralph Williamson, referred to as ‘Ralph Williamson Esquire of Mayfield’ was buried on 29th November 1763. The burial of John Williamson who served as High Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1775 is not recorded, although records of his death in the Staffordshire Advertiser suggest that he died in November 1800.
