Description:The document above signed by Granville Leveson-Gower (1721-1803), the Marquis of Stafford, refers to an Act passed by Parliament for the raising of military forces. The document describes the act which was passed to allow Lord Lieutenants of Counties where Militia had not already been raised ‘to summon a meeting of all persons Qualified and willing to serve as Officers in the Militia’.

The notice, dated 18th December 1759, requests that suitable people ‘qualified to serve as officers in the Militia of the County of Stafford’ meet ‘at the Saracen’s Head in Stafford’ on Monday 31st December 1759. The meeting would allow all people ‘qualified and willing to accept Commissions’ to deliver their ‘name in writing to his Majesty’s Lieutenant’ and specify ‘the Rank’ in which they were willing to serve’.
