Description:The document above is the Bargain and Sale made between Sir Walter Leveson (1550-1602) and Matthew Donnington, concerning the ‘Gray Fryars Monastery’ in Stafford.

Dated 28th April 1581, the document states that for ‘the some of threescore pounds’, Walter Leveson ‘of lileyshill in the County of Salloppe’ sold ‘all that monastarie house commonly called the Graye Freeres’ to Matthew Donnington.

The document tells us that Matthew Donnington was a yeoman from Staffordshire. In addition to the Greyfriars Monastery in the North of Stafford, Donnington also acquired other houses and lands on the site which had belonged to Sir Walter Leveson. Today, the site houses the Greyfriar's Business Park and Cemetary near to Foregate Street.
