Description:The Sutherland Papers contain a number of documents relating to the construction of a new line of road between Trentham Inn and Acton in the Parish of Swynnerton between 1843 and 1850. The construction of the new road involved the Trustees of the Duke of Sutherland, particularly surveyor Liddle Elliot, and the Trustees of the Newcastle and Drayton Turnpike Road, the road which the new road would join at Acton in Swynnerton.

Deeds, plans, correspondence and minutes from meetings tell us about the planned route of this new section of road, the legislation and agreements made in order to open the road to the public and controversy involving local landowners.
