Description:Amongst the many printed advertisements in the Sutherland Papers is a promotional flyer for Bradbury’s Turkish Bath on Albion Street in Hanley.

Printed in 1861, the document includes a number of ‘testimonials’ from people who had visited the baths. William Kettle from Pit Street, Burslem, recommended the Turkish Bath for the treatment of ‘inflammation in the bowels’. After taking two baths at Bradbury’s, Kettle claimed his health had been ‘completely restored’.

Other testimonials recommend the Turkish Baths for the treatment of back pain, sciatica, lock jaw and paralysis. John Drakeford from Broom Street in Hanley claimed that Bradbury’s Turkish Bath had cured ‘a severe attack of paralysis’ which had affected one of his arms. After taking a course of baths, Drakeford ‘recovered the perfect use’ of his arm.
